The control of waste that is generated from the extraction of resource from local quarries and the backfilling of this waste are regulated through the Environment Protection Act (CAP 549), with the backfilling activities being regulated by Subsidiary Legislation 549.50, the Waste Management (Management of Waste from Extractive Industries and Backfilling) Regulations, as published by Directive 2006/21/EC, that transposes Directive 2006/21/EC. The backfilling of inert waste at quarries, from outside sources is also regulated through this Subsidiary Legislation. Other activities such as the recycling of inert waste is regulated by the Subsidiary Legislation 549.63, the Waste Regulations. All quarries carrying out backfilling operations and/or inert waste recycling operations are required to apply for an environmental permit to comply with the relevant regulations.
