Localities with Conservation Value in the Maltese Islands
The book Localities with Conservation Value in the Maltese Islands was published in 1987 by former Environment Division of the Ministry for Education, and was a valuable contribution to the 1987 European Year of the Environment. This publication was the first attempt to identify key localities in the Maltese Islands which support important habitats and species and should therefore be declared as conservation areas. This publication recognises that these sites and the biota they support should be preserved and protected not only for their scientific and ecological value, but also for their cultural, recreational, educational and economic value.
The book, written by experts in their respective fields, lists various sites across the Maltese Islands which are important from a natural history perspective, including for their faunistic, floristic and geological interest. Each locality listed is accompanied by an overview of why it is considered to be of conservation value. Most of the sites listed in the publication have since been included in the National Ecological Network of protected areas.
