ERA has designated the Madliena Woodland as a Tree Protection Area.
Through this designation, the woodland now benefits from enhanced legal protection against activities that could harm its trees and biodiversity, joining more than 60 Tree Protection Areas across the Maltese Islands.
The woodland is primarily composed of mature Aleppo pines, originally planted in the 1970s. In 2019, hundreds of trees of different species were planted by Ambjent Malta and the Swieqi Local Council. Invasive and alien tree species were also replaced with native trees and shrubs.
In addition, through the Environment Fund administered by ERA, a project to regenerate the water reservoir at Fort Madliena has been funded. The reservoir will be used to irrigate the surrounding vegetation and serve as a water resource in the event of fires.
