Air Quality Plan for the Maltese Islands
Directive 1999/30/EC (relating to limit values for sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter and lead in ambient air) specifies thresholds for particulate matter (PM10). This Directive is no longer in force and has been superseded by the Air Quality Directive (2008/50/EC).
The Air Quality Plan for the Maltese Islands (2010) aimed to act as policy guidance to reduce daily average PM10 concentrations in ambient air in the Maltese agglomeration. The traffic measures proposed in this document also aimed to bring the annual average of nitrogen dioxide within the acceptable thresholds. In an effort to minimise exceedances of PM10, the former Malta Environment and Planning Authority prepared this plan containing short term and medium term measures aimed at ensuring compliance with the PM10 daily limit value by June 2011.
The measures contained in the document targeted the major sources of PM10 in the Maltese Islands. Since road transport is the major contributor to the exceedance of PM10 concentrations in ambient air, the document focuses on measures mainly aiming at reducing vehicle emissions, encouraging modal shift, reducing the traffic impact of new developments, managing the road network and promoting cleaner vehicle technologies.
This air quality plan is being updated in the knowledge of updated air monitoring data.
