A new management plan for the Inwadar National Park has been developed, setting out targets and milestones. The plan aims to restore habitats, promote the Park, restore cultural heritage, and engage local and business communities. The management plan will be administered by the Inwadar Board and with the support of the Environment and Resources Authority and Project Green, the implementation plan has already kicked off.
Through one of the key measures of the management plan, the Inwadar Park has been extended to include the Żonqor area. This extension will guarantee further area for protection of flora and fauna in the Park and ensures that the new areas are also covered by the proposed measures.
The Inwadar Park is a vast open space characterized by Mediterranean maquis and garigue landscapes, and coastal cliffs. Additionally, it features historical sites dating to different periods of Malta’s history.
The Management Plan identifies four main objectives; to value our environment in its natural form; to be a model of environmental regeneration; to raise consciousness on different aspects of the park; and to promote natural areas as sources for economic growth in the Park’s peripheries. Each objective carries relevant targets, timeframes and indicators to assist in their implementation. Priority will be given to habitat restoration, including possible forestation efforts, and the restoration of the coastal communities.
These works are expected to create an accessible space that promotes Inwadar Park’s natural features while also providing visitors with space for leisure activities and promoting activities such as trekking and educational walks.
