Guidelines on managing non-native plant invaders and restoring native plant communities in terrestrial settings in the Maltese Islands
The Guidelines on managing non-native plant invaders and restoring native plant communities in terrestrial settings in the Maltese Islands were developed with the aim of guiding managers of protected sites and entities involved in the removal of invasive plants and habitat management or restoration on best practices for the removal of invasive plants and undertaking efforts aimed at reinstating or restoring native plant communities. The methodologies provided in the document are not prescriptive, but should been seen as points to consider when making informed decisions.
These guidelines address some of the major invasive alien species of terrestrial plants in the Maltese Islands. Archaeophytes that require some form of management to control their encroachment are also addressed. The objectives of these guidelines are to assist in the planning and implementation of programmes aimed at counteracting the spread of extant invasive alien species of plants in important natural and semi-natural areas and rural areas; and to guide when designing and implementing native plant conservation translocations, aimed at reinstating native plant communities to a favourable conservation status or an ecological function. These guidelines fall within the policy framework provided by Malta’s National Biodiversity Strategy & Action Plan (2012 – 2020).
