The European Environment Agency (EEA) coordinates periodic assessments of Europe’s environment, providing a comprehensive overview of environmental, climate, and sustainability trends and the effectiveness of related policies. These assessments also highlight opportunities to improve and better implement existing policies.

In preparing its flagship report, Europe’s environment – State and Outlook 2025, the EEA draws on the latest scientific evidence and extensive data from EIONET (the European Environment Information and Observation Network, a partnership between the EEA and 38–39 countries) and over 600 national partner institutions. It also incorporates information from international bodies such as the European Commission, OECD, WHO, and UN, as well as the most recent national state of the environment reports, including Malta’s own reporting.

Europe’s environment 2025 consists of three main components:

• Main report: Integrates environment and climate trends within the EU’s vision for a sustainable Europe by 2050.
• Thematic briefings: Provide concise, comparable overviews of past trends, outlooks to 2030, and assessments of prospects for meeting EU policy targets across 35 topics, including how Malta is performing.
• Country profiles: Offer national-level assessments of environmental and climate trends, socio-economic developments, and sectoral changes—including Malta’s energy, mobility, food systems, and other sectors—allowing for benchmarking against other EU countries.

The report also introduces improved tools for communication and outreach, including visual and branding guidance to support clear, accessible, and frequent reporting. Malta can leverage these resources to:

• Update national State of the Environment reports with the latest EU data and 2030 projections.
• Align environmental indicators with EU benchmarks for easier comparison and trend monitoring.
• Monitor policy target progress, identifying areas where Malta may be off-track and prioritizing action.
• Enhance public communication using consistent visuals, branding, and more frequent reporting.
