River Basin Management Plan

River Basin Management Plan

The EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) requires that Member States prepare a River Basin Management Plan as a framework to provide administrative bodies, local authorities and the general public directions and objectives in relation to groundwater, coastal waters and protected inland surface water management issues.

Apart from objectives and measures to achieve good status, the plans include the characterisation of the Water Catchment District, an overview of the pressures and impacts on water resources, an overview of the water monitoring programme, an assessment of the status of Malta’s water bodies, an economic analysis and an overview of the public consultation process, amongst others.

To date Malta has adopted three Water Catchment/River Basin Management Plans:

  • The First Water Catchment Management Plan for the Maltese Islands (2010 – 2015)
  • The 2nd Water Catchment Management Plan for the Malta Water Catchment District (2015 – 2021)
  • The 3rd River Basin Management Plan for the Malta Water Catchment District (2021 – 2027)
