Guidelines for Good Forestation Practices in the Maltese Islands

ERA has prepared the Guidelines for Good Forestation Practices in the Maltese Islands to provide general advice on best practices for successful forestation projects in both rural and urban areas. These are intended to assist various entities, ranging from but not limited to, governmental and private entities, local councils, voluntary organisations, businesses, professionals to the general public (such as landscape designers, contractors, developers, engineers) to:

    • Promote environmentally friendly and ecologically sound forestation practices;
    • Encourage greening and ecological restoration incentives in different areas using suitable species;
    • Establish common standards of good forestation practices (including sustainable watering practices, using reservoirs), in line with complimentary national legislation;
    • Encourage ownership and long-term maintenance of forestation projects; and
    • Support the implementation of the National Trees and Woodlands Strategy and Action Plan.

These guidelines should be followed from the inception of any planting initiative to ensure project success and could be incorporated into the ERA’s permitting process for enforcement.

The Guidelines are structured in three key sections:

    • Part A: Project Concept
    • Part B: Project Design
    • Part C: Project Implementation

A checklist of recommendations, based on best practices, is also included to help landscape professionals and other stakeholders ensure the success and maintenance of their projects.

This policy document has been approved in line with Article 51 of the Environment Protection Act (Cap. 549).
