Air is continuously monitored for the presence of ionising radiation. Radiation monitoring stations monitor alpha, beta and gamma radiation in real-time.

These stations are linked to a central server which uploads the data to the European Radiological Data Exchange Platform (EURDEP). Presently ERA runs three ionising radiation monitoring stations which are located at fixed sites in Bengħajsa, Attard and Għarb Gozo.

EURDEP: EUropean Radioactivity Data Exchange Platform.

European Commission The map shows measurements of environmental radioactivity in the form of gamma dose rate averages and maxima for the last 24 hours. These measurements originate from some 5500 stations in 39 countries.

The EURDEP platform has no alerting function. The notification of a radiological accident or emergency is accomplished through early notification networks such as ECURIE or EMERCON, operated by the EC and the IAEA respectively. No action may be taken based on this data without prior consultation with the data-provider.

Most of the measurements presented are NON-VALIDATED DATA, which means that meteorological conditions such as heavy rain or snow, or defects in the instruments, electronics or software can result in erroneous values. As a consequence isolated alarming objects on the map CANNOT automatically be taken as an indication of increased levels of radioactivity. Even if several nearby stations show increased values, this does not necessarily imply an ongoing emergency, because similar effects can be caused by calibration tests on the monitoring stations concerned or heavy showers in the region.

The widget

This widget is a part of the EURDEP widgets framework. The framework was developed and maintained by the European Commission Joint Research Centre, is currently in a beta preview and undergo a continuous improvement, therefore a number of functionalities have not been yet made available. A more detailed description of the EURDEP system can be found at REMON. Comments and/or problem reporting regarding any aspect of the EURDEP system can be sent by Email to ec-eurdep(at)
