Project Overview

Green Infrastructure

The vision for Spencer Garden was to create a flagship national garden that served as a model for future green spaces, offering a peaceful refuge within a urbanised environment. The garden provided visitors with a tranquil and easily accessible setting where they could reconnect with nature and momentarily escape the pressures of day to day life.

The landscape design along the garden’s perimeter incorporated a variety of features, including thematic gardens, a plant nursery, and elevated structures that introduce visual interest and varied topography. Together with integrated sound barriers, these elements formed a calming buffer that help shield both visitors and natural wildlife from the surrounding noise and activity.

The project also prioritised sustainable land use by reducing the extent of concrete surfaces and introducing porous materials. These facilitated natural water and mineral percolation, encouraged the growth of wild plant species, and promoted biodiversity by supporting pollinators and other wildlife.

Better Use of Urban Space

Spencer Garden was envisioned as one of the key green hubs within the highly urbanised Southern Harbour area. The site was under redevelopment and was completed by 2024. The refurbishment successfully transformed the space into a green oasis within an otherwise industrial and built-up environment.

The garden was made easily accessible to visitors, delivering tangible social and environmental benefits. It supports a range of social and recreational activities, offering a comfortable and welcoming environment enhanced by amenities such as free Wi-Fi. Ultimately, Spencer Garden provides a space for relaxation, social interaction, and wellbeing, demonstrating the value of integrating high-quality green infrastructure into dense urban settings.
