The Environment Report – Indicator Booklet 2010-2011
The Environmental Report Indicators 2010-2011 track progress on recent trends related to the Maltese environment. This is the 6th annual publication of its kind. The booklet aims to provide easy access to environmental information for policy-makers, organisations and the general public, complementing the state of the environment report, which is published every 3 years. This booklet updates the last booklet published in 2011, which reflected the situation in 2009. This year, we are publishing data on the basis of ‘latest available data’, so in many cases the 2009 data is updated with data from 2011, and a comparison is made with the previous year, as in past publications.
In order to help readers track progress easily, each indicator is accompanied by a smiley, neutral or sad face. Indicators are awarded a smiley (or not) depending on 2 criteria: the overall dimension of the environmental problem, as well as the trend. Thus, an indicator is awarded a smiley if an improvement was registered and the recent trend is positive. On the other hand, an indicator is awarded a neutral or sad face where there was no improvement or where the recent trend was negative.
This environmental indicators booklet is published by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority in partnership with the National Statistics Office, and is based on datasets from across the Maltese Government and other organisations.

State of the Environment – Indicator Booklet 2009
The Environment Indicators 2009 help us keep track of progress and trends in the state of the Maltese environment. With this publication, which is the 5th annual publication of its kind, we are once again aiming to provide easy access to environmental information to policy-makers, organisations and the general public. This booklet complements the state of the environment report, which is published every 3 years. Updating the latest Environment Report published in 2010, which reflected the situation in 2008, the data in this booklet covers 2009, or provides the latest available data if it is earlier than 2009.
As in previous editions, each indicator is accompanied by a smiley, neutral or sad face, to help readers to track progress with regards to particular environmental indicators. It is important to note, however, that the award of a smiley (or not) depends on two criteria: the overall dimension of the environmental problem as well as the trend. This means that an indicator is awarded a smiley if the overall situation, as well as the recent trend, are both positive. On the other hand, if there is a small positive trend but the overall trend remains a matter of concern, the indicator is not awarded a smiley.
This booklet of environmental indicators is published by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority in partnership with the National Statistics Office, and draws on datasets from across the Maltese government and other organisations.
State of the Environment – Indicator Booklet 2007

Similar to previous years, the State of the Environment Indicators 2007 have been compiled by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority in partnership with the National Statistics Office, and draw upon information and data deriving from environmental monitoring programmes carried out by various government agencies including the Malta Resources Authority and the Department of Environmental Health. State of the Environment – Indicator Booklet 2006
The 2006 State of the Environment Indicators update the set of indicators that were published with the 2005 State of the Environment Report. The objective of these indicators is to provide timely information on key environmental trends to policymakers, organisations and the public in an active, user-friendly and systematic way.
This year the indicators are once again accompanied by a smiley, neutral or sad face. Two criteria have been used for awarding smileys, related both to the overall dimensions of the problem and the recent trend. For example, while a smiley has been awarded where there is a positive trend, if there is a small positive change in the trend but the overall issue remains a matter of concern, a smiley has not been awarded.
The 2006 State of the Environment Indicators have been compiled by MEPA in partnership with the National Statistics Office, and draw upon environmental monitoring programmes carried out by numerous government agencies including the Malta Resources Authority and the Department of Public Health, as well as other sources.
As with last year, this website contains not only the booklet of indicators, but also the related datasheets and maps. These products are also available on CD.
